“Thor: Love and Thunder” review

Thor – the mighty thunder god of Asgard, one of the first superheroes of MCU but also the most tragic one. He lost his parents, teammates, brothers as well as his people. As the story of the Avenger’s first-generation superheroes came to an end, Thor still roamed his adventures. And a new story about the Space Viking begins again in Thor: Love and Thunder.

After the events of Endgame, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) ceded the New Asgard leadership to Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) then with Korg (Waika Taititi) and the Guardians of the Galaxy team, they went on an adventure to help different races across the universe. However, a new threat emerges when a series of planetary gods are killed by Gorr The God Butcher (Christian Bale), who is once devout but has been betrayed by his faith. He was tempted by the Necrosword that had the power to take the lives of gods. Asgard gods are also Gorr’s targets, and Thor has to return to Earth to protect his people. Here he meets his ex-girlfriend, Dr. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who now has a new form, Mighty Thor, wielding the thunder god’s powers through Mjolnir, which was destroyed by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok. Thor, Jane, and Valkyrie must find a way to defeat Gorr, and they conclude with a solution of seeking help from Omnipotence gods, especially Zeus (Russell Crowe) with his powerful weapon, Thunderbolt.

Fast and lacking depth storyline

Before its release, the film’s length of only 119’ made many concerned that the film was too short to fully develop, and in fact, it’s correct. Director Waika Tatiti as Korg in the role of narrator has restrained details to the maximum. All of which are forced to occur quickly, making the character lines not developed thoroughly. Korg keeps telling and everyone has to listen, that rhythm made the characters seem fleeting on screen, without a natural growth, which is difficult for audiences to attach to both story and characters.

The title Love and Thunder clearly embodies the film’s message. Marvel brings Jane back, completing the love part that has been forgotten in the Thunder god’s journey since Thor: The Dark World. However, as the film plot goes quickly and the flashbacks are also rushed through, the Love part is rather short.

Marvel-style graphics are still impressive

Meanwhile, the Thunder part is quite attractive, the techniques and creativity of battles are very eye-catching, and the light effects when the weapons collide create a good contrast between the dark substance of Necrosword and the glare of Stormbreaker, Mjolnir, Thunderbolt. Battles also become more flexible when some new moves are added.

Bland script but amazing soundtracks

Waika Taititi still retains the weirdness of his storytelling, but the fact that the script is somewhat safe and overwhelming with personal humor, makes audience feel uncomfortable. And if not matched, you will find the overall plot quite bland. But the music is worth noting with great rock hits that push the fights to climax. Sweet Child O’ Mine is breathtaking!

Christian Bale with great performance

Most of the main actors bring quite good performances, but Christian Bale’s acting is really out of level. Bale’s talent and charisma in his eyes, voice, and facial expression make Gorr extremely dark, and extremely haunting. There used to be public opinion that the image of Gorr was not the same as the original, but when it comes to Bale, it was superfluous to put on dozens of CGI costumes.

Final thoughts

Thor: Love and Thunder is a controversial film for both audiences and critics when Taika’s style is inherently weird and the film’s script is too safe and predictable. There is a problem with Marvel Studio that their Phase 4 is gradually becoming disjointed compared to the big picture that Infinity Saga has brought to audience. When fans’ expectations are too high, they will easily be disappointed with works like Thor 4. And when viewed from an individual perspective, Thor: Love and Thunder is just a pure entertainment experience.

Score: 3/5 Stars
