The latest season of “Love, Death & Robots” is the brand reboot after a disappointing vol 2.

Went live in 2019, “Love, Death & Robots” is an animated series co-produced by Tim Miller and David Fincher. The first season immediately impressed viewers with mind-blowing graphics, creative plots, and unique violent and sexual elements. Unfortunately, season 2 was a significant step back as it was too boring. So when Netflix announced the release of season 3, there were many concerns about its quality. Thankfully, “Love, Death & Robots 3” has regained viewers’ trust, although it has not yet surpassed the big shadow of the first season.

Each episode has its own graphic style

Contrary to the poverty of season 2, “Love, Death & Robots 3” is an epic experience with graphics. Each episode owns a different unique color. This is an eye-catching party of both 2D and 3D. We can both dive into the traditional 2D world of The Very Pulse of the Machine, Kill Team Kill, and modern 3D animation in Swarm, Mason’s Rats, or Bad Travelling

To make the mixture more perfect, the filmmakers combined flattering colors and various graphical tricks, bringing such a satisfactory visual feast.

Some episodes like Night of the Mini Dead choose a unique high-angle that resembles a lot of the stop-motion movie genre.

In Vaulted Halls Entombed applies modern motion-capture technology commonly found in blockbusters and AAA games. Acting in this episode is demonstrated through the great performance of a series of Hollywood well-known figures such as Joe Manganiello, Christian Serratos, and Jai Courtney.

Finally, Jibaro is a distinctive combination of surreal-looking cinematography and unrelenting, jarring camera movement.

Violence and humanism

Like its prequels, “Love, Death & Robots 3” is still full of heavy violence, sex, and deep humanistic philosophies.

Three Robots: Exit Strategies is the continuation of Three Robots in the first season when the 3 robots travel in the post-apocalyptic human world. This time, they passed through the remaining human shelters such as a giant drilling rig of millionaires, the nuclear bomb cellars…But in the end, there is nothing left due to humans’ evil nature.

Bad Traveling reveals the cunning and greed of humans. The Very Pulse of the Machine reminds us of Fish Night in the first season as it is also a journey of inner discovery in the middle of a vast desert. Swarm is a metaphor for how antibodies fight back viruses and how mankind evolved. Jibaro shares a distinctive perspective about the Spanish colonial invasion of America, interwoven with the story of love, greed, and betrayal.

The action and gore scenes of Love, Death, and Robots 3 are still impressive, especially in Kill Team Kill, Mason’s Rats and In Vaulted Halls Entombed episodes. Swarm reveals yet another monstrous creature far beyond anything we’ve ever known. The series also brings many metaphorical images for further imagination.

The overall plot is not really groundbreaking

With such outstanding graphics, however, the “Love, Death and Robots 3” plot is quite stereotyped and has no breakthrough. Three Robots: Exit Strategies is still the story of how humans will come to an end. Night of the Mini Dead is like a miniature picture of the familiar zombie epidemic. Mason’s Rats and Kill Team Kill are simply violent shows. In Vaulted Halls Entombed resembles the Cthulhu monster in Lovecraft, but it’s nothing else but cliché kill scenes.

Apart from the 3 episodes of Swarm, Bad Traveling, and Jibaro, the series has no notable name. Most episodes are encounters between powerful forces with weaker ones. The majority of characters in season 3 are built quickly. It’s hard to find a character to sympathize with like Sonnie’s Edge or Shape-Shifters. There is also no deep sadness like in Good Hunting or the meaning in life in Zima Blue. The 3rd season also has no episode that is as controversial and haunting as Beyond the Aquila Rift.

Final words

Although it hasn’t overcome season 1, “Love, Death & Robots 3” is still one of the most qualified and worth watching products. Hopefully, in the next season, the filmmakers can maintain their visual style and improve the variety of content further.

Our point: 3.5/5
