This is Pride Month, the world month to speak out against stigma and discrimination against the  LGBTQ+ community with many meaningful activities, not only in reality but also through movies, over the past 3 decades. 

And now, when people’s viewpoints on sexuality have become more open than ever, it is also the most glorious era of the LGBTQ+ movie genre with many masterpieces released. This article compiled the most prominent names that we believe their impact will last forever. 

Best LGBTQ+ movies ahead of time

1. Desert Hearts (1985)

Set in 1959, Desert Hearts follows a British professor, Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver), who arrives in Reno, Nevada for a quick divorce and unexpectedly develops a relationship with the daughter of the landlady Cay (Helen Shaver). Patricia Charbonneau). Desert Hearts is reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable’s classic movie – The Misfits, which is also about a woman going through a quick divorce in Reno.

Based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel, The Price of Salt, Carol tells the story of Therese (Rooney Mara), an aspiring young photographer who falls in love with an older, married woman, Carol (Cate Blanchett). This enchanting movie makes your heart skip a beat even in the quietest of scenes. The chemistry of the two main characters spills over into every frame, making even those who are in love or not sob.

3. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is set in the late 18th century when the painter Marianne (Noemie Merlant) arrives on the coast of Brittany to paint a wedding portrait of Heloise (Adele Haenel). Heloise has only two options, either accept Marianne to draw her, or she will have to marry the person she doesn’t love. The results were so obvious, Heloise agreed to be the model for Marianne, thereby creating a mysterious and also charming love story between two beautiful women.

4. Call Me By Your Name (2017)

Adolescence is always the most beautiful age with unforgettable first crushing. That’s also what happened to Elio. That summer, Oliver, an American student, entered his life and left him a beautiful but not less painful love.

Call Me By Your Name not only captivates us with the poetic scenes of Italy, emotional soundtracks, and the intense as well as tender love story of the two main characters, but is also a deep insight into youth, love, and sexuality. 

5. Happy Together (1997)

If there is one director who defines the cinema of suffering and longing, that must be Wong Kar-wai. If In the Mood for Love and Chungking Express carry a deep yearning for lost or incomplete love, Happy Together expresses a sincere desire to be closer to the beloved ones even when they’re beside us.

The film follows two gay Hong Kong men in Buenos Aires and their toxic relationship. For all the simplicity of the narrative, Happy Together is anything but slight. It’s a moody, contemplative piece of work, and a vividly tactile one as well, lingering on food, smoke, bodies, blood, and water.
