The long-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water is finally coming to the theater. To help you have the best preparation before the official release, we collected all the latest information on the film (from trailer, plot, cast, etc).
After 13 years after the first movie, the sequel of Avatar is now confirmed to release in late 2022. The news has been rocking the movie community. In this sequel, fans will be able to see what’s next for Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), following on from the events of the first film which saw Jake permanently transferred into his avatar after Ney’tiri saves him from suffocation.
Avatar: The Way of Water release date
The film is set for a global release on December 16, 2022.
Why has it taken so long?
If you want the full story of the sequel’s long and drawn-out journey to the screen, here goes. Looking back on it, it seems almost absurd that Avatar 2 was scheduled for release in December 2014, and Avatar 3 was scheduled for December 2015.
After delays filming was meant to start on Avatar 2 in April 2016, but April came and went, and filming never began. In January the following year, it was announced that work on the motion-capture element of the film would start by August 2017, but it actually began in September.
The announcement of a fourth Avatar movie pushed the whole lot back, and then they were all pushed back again, with Avatar 2 planned for December 2017 (and the rest set for 2018 and 2019 presumably). James Cameron blamed the “very involved” writing process for the delays.
Next, in January 2017, Avatar 2 was delayed again, the assumption being that it ran scared after Star Wars: The Last Jedi moved from May to December 2017.
The sequel was then set for a December 2020 release before Disney shifted it again to December 2021, after completing the takeover of Fox, and that brings us right up to the latest delay.
Through it all though, Cameron has been completely chilled out about any delays. “It was a seven-year gap between The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the seven-year gap between Alien and Aliens,” he said.
Avatar: The Way of Water plot
So far, we know that the film tells the story of the Sully family, and the trials and tribulations they face living on Pandora.
The official film plot reads: “Jake Sully and Neytiri have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans.”
In addition to this, it has been revealed that the film will explore the oceans of Pandora and they used underwater motion capture technology during the filming process.
Avatar 2 cast
Of course, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana reprise their roles as Jake and Neytiri, and they are joined by Stephen Lang who returns as the dead Colonel Miles Quaritch. It has been revealed he will be the main villain, although the exact circumstances surrounding his resurrection have not been confirmed!
Sigourney Weaver returns as an as-yet-unnamed new character, as well as Kate Winslet who has been confirmed to play the role of Ronal in the upcoming sequels
In addition to this, during an interview with Empire Magazine, producer Jon Landau revealed that there was a new human character in the sequel called Spider (Jack Champion). This character was raised in the bioluminescent jungle by Jake and Neytiri.
Say hello to #Avatar2’s new human character, Spider – a child adopted by Na’vi parents Jake and Neytiri.
