5 Most Villainous Jake Gyllenhaal Characters (In Ambulance and More)

From Danny Sharp in Ambulance to Joe Baylor in The Guilty, which are the best villainous characters of Jake Gyllenhaal?

The action thriller Ambulance is Jake Gyllenhaal’s latest movie and has him playing a desperate criminal in an increasingly intense situation. Though Gyllenhaal can be the typical Hollywood leading man, he also seems to have a lot of fun playing the less than heroic characters.

There are a variety of roles in which Gyllenhaal has embraced darker characters. Some of them are somewhat misunderstood yet flawed people, others are grounded and flawed humans, and some are larger-than-life baddies. Looking at these past Gyllenhaal roles, some are more villainous than others.

Joe Baylor – The Guilty (2021)

The recent thriller The Guilty is a terrific display of Gyllenhaal’s outstanding talents while also giving him a very complex character to play. Jon Baylor is a Los Angeles police officer who, following an incident in the line of duty, is assigned as a 911 operator pending the trial.

After getting a call from a woman who has apparently been kidnapped, Baylor does everything he can to save her. However, his aggression and short temper sometimes make the situation worse. In the end, he is revealed to be a very flawed man who, at the very least, is willing to face the punishment he deserves.

Danny Sharp – Ambulance (2022)

Gyllenhaal plays Danny Sharp in Michael Bay’s new action-thriller Ambulance. He is a career criminal who cares for his adoptive brother, Will, yet proves to be a reckless and deadly person when pushed.

He is clearly a bad influence, convincing Will to join him in his crimes. But after a heist goes wrong, Danny really shows how dangerous he is as he is ready to kill anyone who gets in his way of making it to freedom with his money.

Johnny Wilcox – Okja (2017)

Before making Oscar history with Parasite, Bong Joon-ho directed the wild adventure movie Okja. The movie follows a young girl living in a rural Korean village whose best friend, a giant pig, is captured. Gyllenhaal has a small but memorable role as Johnny Wilcox.

Wilcox is the eccentric spokesman for an animal rights organization but is also a massive hypocrite. Though he speaks passionately on behalf of the animals, once away from the public, he shows that he doesn’t care at all about them or the suffering they endure.

Quentin Beck/Mysterio – Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

Initially, Quentin Beck aka Mysterio is introduced as an ally to Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Far From Home. After losing his mentor Tony Stark, Peter is thrilled to have an older hero to guide him as they save the world together.

But Beck is eventually revealed to be a disgruntled Stark Technologies employee who seeks to gain powerful tech by manufacturing a global threat. He is also willing to kill Peter and many more innocent people in order to succeed. And in the end, he still wins in a way as he exposes Spider-Man’s identity to the world.

Louis Bloom – Nightcrawler (2014)

Though Mysterio might be a villain on a grander scale, Louis Bloom from Nightcrawler is the most ruthless and disturbing character Gyllenhaal has played. He is also a very ambitious man who seeks to make a name for himself in the world of video journalism.

Bloom proves himself to be a natural for the cutthroat business thanks to his lack of morals. He bends the law, blackmails, and even has people killed just to ensure his own path to success.
